Campus Hangout
[The Hindu, Chennai, Feb 21, 2009 ]

IT’S A GREEN WORLD More than just java
The Hangout: Java Green
S.R.M. University
Rush Hour:
After classes and during lunch hour on weekdays,
all day on weekends.
Where it’s at:
In the heart of the annexure campus, right by the hostels
and the auditorium, and close to the IT park, biotech block, etc.
What’s to love:
A full-blown food court right in the middle of the campus… need we
say more? Everyone may call the little open-air enclosure with its
umbrella-topped tables ‘Java Green’ after the coffee shop that’s
right at the entrance, but the restaurants and food stalls surrounding
it offer a lot more than just java.
“We have plenty of variety — sandwiches, Chinese food, parathas, dosas,
kebabs, fresh juices, ice-creams,” says Apoorv. (“The chocolate mousse
is to die for,” adds Ankit). “And it’s all really easy on the pocket
too,” grins Vishal.
So much variety, in fact, that the hostelites don’t particularly feel
the need to go off campus on weekends. “You don’t have to go into the
city or even Guduvancherry or Tambaram to hangout — we have all the
options right here,” says Pavitra.
Given its central location — close to the hostels, departments, and
the auditorium — and the fact that it’s a shuttle stop for the humungous
campus, Java Green is also the perfect meeting spot for all occasions.
“You just call everyone and tell them, ‘come to Java Green’,”
says Pallavi.
Having a birthday celebration? Java Green’s your spot (and you can even
order the cake right here). Cramming before exams? Ditto — you’ll find
everyone here teaching one another and there’s Wi-Fi for hasty
online references. Bored while killing time and want something to read?
There’s a Higginbothams next door (and for everything else, there’s
the all-purpose supermarket across the road). Before and after functions
at the auditorium, while waiting for the shuttle, for gossip sessions
and round table conferences… it’s got to be Java Green. And quite
understandably too.
What’s not to:
When the crowds get too unwieldy, the spot can get a little messy.
And, there can be issues with flies at times. But on the whole,
the students are pretty excusing of these. “It’s only to be
expected,” shrugs Vignesh.
Alternatives:
Besides, when it comes to food outlets, the students of S.R.M
are spoilt for choice.
They have “10 or 15” canteens scattered at various points all over
the campus, including the hostel canteens that are open 24 hours.
They have Orange Tree, the air-conditioned cafeteria for when things
get too warm at good ol’ Java Green.
And there’s even S.R.M.’s in-house three-star hotel (“you get pretty
much everything there”.) “Hostelites’ parents never have to worry
if we’re getting enough to eat here,” laughs Pavitra. You
aren’t kidding about that.
